Things to do in Puerto Penasco

Jet Skiing

Jet skis are a very popular activity in Rocky Point. Puerto Penasco’s super calm waters and warm temperature make it the perfect place for jet skiing at high speeds if you like. You can find jet ski rentals all through out the town’s beaches. You can rent jet skis for one or two people. Rentals are priced by time starting with a minimum of half an hour. Prices vary from vendor to vendor but the average is 60.00 to 80.00 per hour. When renting a jet ski make sure you stay within the boundaries specified by the handler. If you don’t do that they will come and get you and have you return the jet ski to them with out any refunds regardless of how much time you have left on your rental.

If you bring your own jet ski make sure you have a title for it when you cross the border or you may not be allowed to bring it in. If you don’t own the jet ski then you need the lease agreement allowing you to bring it to Mexico or a notarized statement from the owner. There are a couple boat ramps around town. One at the Old Port (fish market), and there is one ramp in Cholla Bay right next to JJ’s Cantina. You could also launch your jet ski right off the beach if you’re equipped to do this.

So come and have some fun riding a jet ski, you may even be greeted by a friendly dolphin pod during your ride.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

To really immerse yourself in Rocky Point’s amazing ocean environment, just take a dip. You can go snorkeling or, if you want to do more than scrape the surface, try scuba diving. Diverse undersea realms live just off the coast of the Sea of Cortez.

Some of the top scuba and snorkeling spots in the area are located in Cholla Bay and Bird Island.

You can charter a boat from Cholla Bay for a great snorkeling excursion. You will find several companies here to take you on a snorkeling or scuba tour. You will be able to see a more diverse marine life here since the bay is deeper than the beach.

Tucson Beach offers good snorkeling straight from the beach. The beach is located near Cholla Bay and Playa Mirador. the ocean here is calm and guarded from wind and strong water currents.

Another good area is Playa Mirador right off Manny’s Beach Club, this beach has a lot of rocks and makes for a good snorkeling site.

Bird Island offers the overall best experience. These spots generally have clear and warm waters that are more ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling.

The tide in Puerto Peñasco rises and falls every 6 hours so you need to time your diving and snorkeling adventure accordingly or the waters can be too murky hence affecting visibility. It is best to plan your snorkeling and diving time during incoming tide, at high tide and one hour before the outgoing tide. This will allow for better visibility.

There are several companies in town that offer snorkeling and diving tours. If you are not a certified diver these companies have lessons which normally include one pool instruction and one dive in the ocean. The full activity normally lasts about 4 hours and all gear is included. They will take you to the most desirable snorkeling/diving spots in the area. They also offer snorkeling guided tours that include a professional guide.

Prices vary from vendor to vendor but the average rate for the pool lesson and one ocean dive (lasting about 4 hours altogether) is around 120.00 per person. If you are a certified diver you can rent a tank for about 50.00 and two tanks for about 65.00.

Guided snorkeling tours are around 50.00 per person and last about 3 hours or if you prefer to do it on your own you can rent the snorkeling gear for about 12.00 an hour.

Kite Surfing

If you haven’t experienced this exciting and vibrant sport, it can be best described as a mix of wake-boarding and paragliding. Kite surfers strap into a short, double-ended board, and clip their over-sized kites to a harness. Different from windsurfing that requires tackling the wind, kite-boarders can utilize the wind’s energy even if they’re racing dead into it. When it’s time to change direction, they simply adjust their kite, turn their board, and go where they please.

If you are not an experienced kite surfer then you will need lessons but it’s definitely worth it.  Playa Encanto in Puerto Penasco is one of the best spots for kite-surfing.

Lessons and equipment rental are available through Rocky Point Kite Surfing located in Rocky Point in cholla Bay and can be reached at USA:    (734) 341 2397 MEXICO:  (638) 104 3002 [email protected]
