Girls’ Trip to Puerto Penasco: Safe & Fun!
We’ve had the pleasure of helping travelers plan their perfect getaway to Puerto Penasco for years, we’re always thrilled to hear about the amazing experiences our customers have!
Our long-time customer, Diana Bird, was kind enough to share yet another one of her fun-filled adventures with us.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for two women to safely enjoy an 8-day adventure in Rocky Point, this story is for you. After over 25 years of visiting this beautiful seaside town, Diana is sharing a day-by-day glimpse of their latest trip. From relaxing poolside to winning big at Gringo Bingo, here’s how two friends celebrated a birthday, soaked in the sun, and felt completely at home in this safe and welcoming destination.

Day 1: Smooth Border Crossing & Birthday Celebrations
The drive from Las Vegas to Puerto Penasco was easy as pie. When we crossed the border, they barely gave us a second look—just peeked in the back and waved us on through. We never worry much when driving down, especially after 25 years of doing it. We know the town, we know the people, and we always feel safe. As two women, we don’t wear anything too flashy or make a fuss, and we stick to the spots we know and love.
We checked into the Sonoran Spa for our 8-day stay, and what a treat it was! It was Pat’s birthday, so after settling in, we headed straight to Colin’s Cantina for some Gringo Bingo. Wouldn’t you know it? Pat won a game and even snagged a free drink. A birthday to remember already!
Day 2: Poolside Relaxation & Banditos Vibes
Day two was all about relaxation. We spent the morning by the pool, soaking up the sun and cooling off with dips in the water. In the evening, we decided to hit Banditos for a cocktail. The live music was good, just what we needed. The perfect blend of laid-back and lively—exactly why we keep coming back.

Day 3: J.J.’s Cantina & Nostalgia
We took a little drive out to J.J.’s Cantina to catch up with our old friend Caesar. He’s been working there for 38 years, but wouldn’t you know it, the man was on vacation! Looks like we’ll have to visit him next time. No worries, though—it’s always a good time at J.J.’s, even without Caesar around.

Day 4: Sunday with Friends
Sunday was a bit more low-key. We visited a dear friend of mine who lives here, and she has the cutest pug, Harley. We couldn’t get enough of him! Afterward, we treated ourselves to some shrimp appetizers at the Sonora Grill. Their shrimp? Top-notch.

Day 5: Fishing Day Adventure
Fishing day finally arrived, and we were up bright and early. We always book with Del Mar Charters and, as usual, Captain Christopher did not disappoint. He took us out on the boat for over four hours, just the two of us. The boat could have held seven, but it was more fun having it all to ourselves. For $360, it was worth every penny!
We caught a triggerfish and four rock bass. What a haul! But instead of keeping it, we gave the catch to Cristobal, our Captain, for his family to enjoy. It was a hot day, but we survived the August heat. Tip: The months ending in “ber” (September to December) are really the best for fishing, but hey, we made it work!
Day 6: Another Swim Day & Colin’s Cantina
After all the excitement from fishing, we took it easy with another swim day. There’s just something so peaceful about floating in the pool, feeling that ocean breeze. Later, we couldn’t resist heading back to Colin’s Cantina for dinner—this time for their amazing burgers.

Day 7: Margaritas & Guacamole at Wrecked at the Reef
We made our way over to Wrecked at the Reef on Wednesday. The margaritas hit the spot, and the chips, salsa, and guacamole? Absolutely divine! That guac is worth the trip alone. We always stop here at least once when we’re in town—it never disappoints.
Day 8: Gringo Bingo & One Last Win
Our last full day in Puerto Peñasco, and what better way to spend it than back at Colin’s Cantina for one final round of Gringo Bingo? This time, it was my turn to shine. I won the last game and walked away with $50! It’s always a blast, and we can’t wait to return!

After over two decades of trips to Puerto Penasco, we can safely say it’s our home away from home. The locals know us, the food and drinks are always fantastic, and we never feel unsafe. Whether it’s bingo at Colin’s, fishing with Del Mar Charters, or just lounging by the pool, every trip reminds us why we keep coming back. Until next time, Puerto Penasco!
